Do you know how bankers spot a counterfeit? Do they spend years and years studying at the Institute of Bank Spotting Fakers? Nope. Bankers spot fake money by only studying the real thing! They spend hours and hours around the real thing, the real money. They just sit there and count it and count it that when a fake one comes across, they just intuitively know that there is something not right about it. I have discovered this same theory in being a graphic designer. Every real graphic designer loves the cult typeface Helvetica. Now Microsoft decided to make a fake Helvetica called Arial. As I began to study and see Helvetica everywhere, since it literally is everywhere, I started to know everything there is about the typeface. I knew the shape of the letters, the angle of the letters – I can spot helvetica from miles away. Then when Arial comes along and tries to deceive us, I see how it falls short of being helvetica. The lowercase “e” has a different angle then the Helvetica “e”. The lowercase “t” is the most disgusting “t” around. Worst of all Arial destroys the capital “G”. The Helvetica “G” is the most beautiful letter.

Now what does this have to do with anything. Well first of all it means that us here at develop love typography, and mainly Helvetica. Secondly and most importantly this truth applies to knowing the Lord. Why spend time and hours trying to figure out everything out there. Truth will show itself true, and I have found that when I just study the Word I begin to see all the fakes out there. When you just spend time with the Lord and commune with the Lord you begin to know what His character is and what His nature is, and this leads us to know how to live. We don’t need to read every book out there to find direction. Direction is found in studying the Word and spending time with the Lord. Always go to the source to find the truth, and Jesus is the source. Just like the banker, just like the nerdy typographer – we need to spend so much time in the Word and with the Lord that we innately know every false way.
